The aim is to innovate a more advanced model than the established implementation concept, in which several units are designed and implemented taking into account the connection and organization of energy efficiency. The implementation will achieve more synergy benefits, such as lower costs, better utilization of resources and better utilization of energy potential. The project will store process measurement data, which will help optimize energy efficiency. The project responds to the economic challenges of rural areas by providing an example of profitable, environmentally friendly farm operations. The project is being implemented in 2026–2028 by ProAgria Länsi-Suomi with partners. The target group is agricultural entrepreneurs and other rural actors, the project supports with information, an operating model and concrete examples. The project strongly supports the energy self-sufficiency and security of supply of farms. The project operates in several reference frameworks, such as the circular economy, green transition and rural development. Its results are presented through modeling and reporting. Project communication is achieved through linkages in different channels at all stages of the project. The SmartFarm Satakunta project addresses this need by offering concrete solutions to challenges faced by farmers, readiness for the adoption of robotics and automation, and knowledge of the possibilities offered by data spaces. The project supports farmers in joining agricultural data ecosystems that implement fair data economy principles and create future data-driven innovations. SmartFarm Satakunta promotes the implementation of analyses into the daily lives of farmers, accelerating the digitalization of agriculture and advancing sustainable development goals. The project brings together local agricultural entrepreneurs, research institutions, and agricultural actors, fostering regional cooperation and networking. This creates a strong foundation for developing the competitiveness of Satakunta’s agricultural sector and promoting robotics and data spaces. The ”SmartFarm 2.0” concept is a scalable and transferable process across Finland. The main implementers of the project are Tampere University and the Natural Resources Institute Finland. The work methods involve participatory co-development, where farmers actively engage in testing solutions. The project’s investigations and concrete testing activities with measurements produce essential information about the properties and processing of raw materials, profitability and environmental sustainability for primary producers, biomass processors, and for teaching and research. The residue of grain drying is dry material collected in one place, the utilization of which both as material and as energy is to be investigated in more detail. The bedding market for production animals is currently changing. Traditional peat and saw dust are not necessarily available as raw materials as in the past. New bio-based materials are needed for the market, for which residues and by-products from farming and production are an alternative to be explored. A circular economy solution that includes new utilization activities also supports the cooperation of different agricultural actors and companies. After litter use, the material may still have potential uses, as it contains energy and nutrients. There may be potential as an input for biogas production or in the production of bioheat, after which it can still be used as fertilizer. In the region of South-Ostrobothnia it is important to support the low-carbon, secure and digital food-chains that are profitable. Recently, high prices for electricity have decreased the profitability of the farms. The aim of the local EIP project is to develop a concept in which a farm-level heating plant using wood-chips can also produce electricity and utilize the produced CO2. Energy-wise South-Ostrobothnian farm –project will give added value for local farms by increasing the profitability and utilizing CO2 of heating plant. Seinäjoki University of Applied Sciences is the project coordinator in 2024-2025. The EIP project application has been sent to CAP27 program for the Ely-Center of South-Ostrobothnia. Veljekset Ala-Talkkari Oy and Finnish Forest Center will join the project as well as PiPu Ky and the chicken farms of Kangas, Rantala and Kattelus.
